Porch of a Continental Gothic Church

16.9 x 11.7 inches (24.9 x 19.6 inches framed)
Watercolor on wove paper.
2024.133

Gift of Rosemarie Haag Bletter and Martin Filler in honor of the Morgan's Centennial.

Notes
A contemporary of J.M.W. Turner and John Ruskin, Samuel Prout made a career largely from the depiction of architecture in watercolor, especially after he began regular visits to continental Europe in the 1820s. To judge from the dress of the women in the scene, the present drawing likely depicts--or was inspired by--a building in Normandy or Brittany, though the actual structure has not been identified.
