Exhibition label: Ralf here refers to the artist Ralf Winkler, known by the pseudonym A. R. Penck, a friend of Baselitz from the time they met in East Berlin in 1956. Expelled from East Germany in 1980, Penck became, with Baselitz, Jörg Immendorff, and Markus Lüpertz, a leader of the German neo-Expressionist movement that gained international recognition in the 1980s. By associating Penck's portrait with a typical German landscape of pine trees, Baselitz highlights their common national origins.
