Notes
Alongside Richard Diebenkorn and David Park, Nathan Oliveira was part of a group of Bay Area painters who combined the bold, painterly style of abstract expressionism with figurative imagery beginning in the 1950s. In this drawing of a reclining couple, Oliveira relied on a strong light and dark contrast to heighten the effect of the sexually charged subject. The male figure and the head of the woman are shrouded in darkness, while the female body is bathed in light formed from the paper reserve.
