Notes
California-based artist Wayne Thiebaud achieved wide recognition in the early 1960s for his luscious paintings of cakes, candy counters, and ice cream cones. Drawing, however, has been central to his practice since he began his career as a commercial draftsman in the 1940s. As his notes indicate, Thiebaud made this sheet of sketches while visiting an exhibition of European drawings at the Morgan in 1981.
