Three Candy Apples

California-based artist Wayne Thiebaud achieved wide recognition in the early 1960s for his luscious paintings of cakes, candy counters, and ice cream cones. Drawing, however, has been central to his practice since he began his career as a commercial draftsman in the 1940s. Candy apples such as these were a frequent subject for the artist, who seems to have delighted in rendering their sticky, slightly reflective surfaces.
