Notes:

Susan York is known for her use of graphite, both in spare, minimalist drawings and in abstract sculptures consisting of blocks of graphite. The present drawing is related to a current installation at the Drawing Center in which York replicated in graphite some of the foundation stones visible on the lower level of the building. The drawing reproduces the shape of one of the stones. Removed from its referent, it may evoke contemporary architecture, a landscape, or a layer of stratum extracted from a prehistoric rock formation. It is a striking example of York's innovative and multidimensional use of graphite.
