Notes
A major realist painter of the second half of the twentieth century, Jack Beal is known for his a figure compositions anchored in the academic tradition. Around 2000 he produced two large murals for the MTA Times Square station depicting modern interpretations of classical mythology. This sketchbook reveals his interest in the landscape, both in detailed studies from nature and in copies of classical landscape painters such as the seventeenth-century Dutch Jacob von Ruisdael.
