Notes:

The present work belongs to a group of drawings depicting butterflies created by the landscape painter Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902). He created these works to entertain guests at his New York residence and provide them with a souvenir of their visit. He applied daubs of bright oil paint on a sheet of paper and then folded the sheet in half to transfer the paint and create a symmetrical image that resembled a butterfly.
