Notes:

Turk was a member of the Young British Artists who dominated the British avant-garde of the 1990s and became internationally known through group exhibitions such as Sensation in 1997. Working in a variety of media, Turk addresses issues of authorship and authenticity in a manner reminiscent of Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol. Questioning the notion of the hand of the artist, he has created drawings with stains such as Tea Stain (2004). In the same vein, the present drawing was made by placing the sheet in front of the exhaust pipe of a van before starting the engine. The unpredictable motif relates this drawing to the Surrealists' use of chance.in making art.
