Notes:

Jones's drawings are often related to his work as a performance artist. Here, the central figure is his alter ego, Mudman, a walking sculpture of twigs and mud into which he transformed himself in performances based on his experience in Vietnam. Typically Jones reworked his drawings over many years (hence the date span), layering grotesque figures and hybrid creatures executed in a variety of techniques. Favoring the antiacademic practice of combining different styles within the same work, Jones merges high and low traditions by fusing references to earlier masters, such as Tiepolo and Picasso, and comic books.
