Notes
Based in Amsterdam, South-African born artist Marlene Dumas is a major international artist, who was the subject of a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 2009. Her work focuses on the human figure in images whose poignancy and eroticism recall the art of Egon Schiele. Watercolors represent a large part of her production. Stream, an image of a male nude, is a remarkable example of her expressive style and fluid technique, which relies on pouring watery ink on the paper and applying it with large Chinese brushes.
