Allegory of Poetry(?) II

Hubert François Gravelot
1699-1773

Allegory of Poetry(?) II

5 x 3 1/8 inches (127 x 79 mm)
Pen and black ink, on paper; incised with the stylus.
1968.15:38

Gift of John F. Fleming.

Notes
Gravelot's design has not been related to an illustration appearing in a published volume. The classical figure of a woman is shown standing with a palm of wreath in her right hand and her left hand raised in a dramatic gesture; she is surrounded by symbols of sacred and heroic poetry, and Pegasus is shown on the wing at upper left. See 1968.15:37 for a related drawing, as yet unconnected to a publication.
