Notes
Gravelot's design is preparatory for an engraved frontispiece to Chant IX of Voltaire's “La Pucelle d'Orléans” (Genève : Cramer, 1762; facing p. 159). The scene depicts Arondel and La Tremoille and their mistresses sitting in a landscape; beyond, at left, are a group of praying monks while St Mary Magdalene appears on a cloud in the upper left corner. See also 1968.15:34-36 for further preparatory drawings by Gravelot for the same publication.
