Notes:

Alpuy began his career in the 1940s as a disciple of Joaquin Torres-Garcia (1874--1949), whose Montevideo workshop played a major role in promoting geometric abstract art in South America. The drawings in his sketchbooks, done during travels in Europe and the Middle East, exemplify the constructivist style Alpuy developed by combining European abstraction with visual elements of a more indigenous character. In 1961, Alpuy, who was also a sculptor, immigrated to New York, where he remained for the rest of his life.
