Notes:

Juel was the foremost Danish portraitist of his day, and was appointed court painter in 1780. During the next forty years, he produced a large number of elegant yet remarkably unidealized portraits of royal, aristocratic, and bourgeois sitters. Clearly drawn from life, this sketch seems to be preparatory for a commissioned painting, though the sitter has not been identified. -- Exhibition Label, from "Life Lines: Portrait Drawings from Dürer to Picasso."
