Summary: 

Eugene Berman is best known for his Baroque-like stage set designs and his imaginary landscapes. In 1945, the year that the drawing was made, Berman's work was included at the Whitney Museum of American Art's annual exhibition and there was also an important retrospective exhibition in the same year of his sets and costumes at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Berman also provided costumes for Balanchine's Pas de Deux that year.
