Simonetta Prosperi Valenti Rodino first identified this sheet, formerly attributed to Carlo Maratti, as a group of studies by Maratti's pupil Niccolò Berrettoni, for the latter's painting of The Angel helping St. Anthony Abbot find St. Paul the Hermit of 1658, painted for the church of Sant'Antonio in Pesaro and now in the Seminar there. (For the painting, see L. Barroero and V. Casale, eds., Niccolò Berrettoni (Pesaro 1998), 163-65.
Formerly attributed to Carlo Maratta, Camerano 1625-1713 Rome.

Watermark: Fleur-de-lis in circle, surmounted by a crown, fragment, lined drawing. Probable watermark on lining.
