Landscape
Pen and brown ink on paper.
3 x 4 3/4 inches (77 x 121 mm)

Inscription:
Inscribed at lower right in pen and brown ink, "TH.R".
Provenance:
Joseph F. McCrindle, New York (McCrindle collection no. C0053).
Notes:
This landscape drawing in pen and brown ink entered the Morgan Library & Museum under the name Théodore Rousseau; however, the artist's monogram at the lower right corner resembles a "doubtful or false" monogram listed in Michel Schulman's catalogue raisonné of the artist's graphic oeuvre. (Michel Schulman, Théodore Rousseau, 1812-1867: catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre graphique. Paris, 1997, p. 353). Furthermore, the heavy application of wash and the heavy cross hatching in the sky seems atypical of Rousseau.
Associated names:
McCrindle, Joseph F., former owner.
