Two Naked Swordsmen, Fleeing Figures
Pen and brown ink with brown wash and red chalk on paper.
6 7/8 x 11 5/16 inches (174 x 288 mm)
The Joseph F. McCrindle Collection.
Inscribed in pen and brown ink at lower left, "L fage".
P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., Ltd., London; from whom acquired by Joseph F. McCrindle (1923-2008), New York, 1963; bequest of Joseph F. McCrindle.
While the dramatic subject and broad execution have led this sheet to be attributed to Lafage, Alain Combres does not consider it indisputably by the artist. The subject, with its nude swordsmen engaged in battle as a pair of drapery-swathed figures flee the scene, has not been identified.
