Summary

The present scene depicts objects used for harvesting shellfish strewn on a beach at low tide. Figures, engaged in the process of collection sea creatures, walk towards a group in the distance. Like his four brothers and father, Copley Fielding was an artist. Copley Fielding, a prolific painter, spent his career specializing in idealized maritime subjects and landscapes. His chosen medium-watercolor-became popular in the turn of the century after the foundation in Britain of several societies devoted to its promotion. The present sheet shows a clear command of the medium. The signature "C.F." on the far left barrel indicates this is a work by Copley Fielding.
