Watermark: letters "CS" with flourish.
From 1782 to 1783, Jones depicted a series of Neapolitan views that notably broke with the conventions of classical landscape painting in favor of direct observation. This vista, taken from the studio windows of Jones's apartment, shows the domes of S. Caterina and S. Maria degli Angeli. With his delicate medium, the artist captured the outline of the city against a blue sky interspersed with clouds. It is the only extant watercolor of this subject, which Jones more commonly sketched in oils on paper. -- Exhibition Label, from "Drawn to Greatness: Master Drawings from the Thaw Collection"
