Inscribed by artist in brown ink at bottom of drawing, "Goll as the Inquisitor "Tis but a word, Don Alonzo dies, Tis but a word, and Don Alonzo lives."; inscribed in another hand in graphite on drawing, "IX"; verso: inscribed in graphite at bottom of mount, "Given to Mrs. E. M. Fitzgerald-by Thackeray".
