Notes
              Taught by his father, Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761-1845), and Baron Gros, Julien-Léopold or Jules - as he was also called - began studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris in 1814. Known principally for historical subjects he also painted portraits, nudes, genre subjects, church interiors, and ruins.
