One of an early and famous series of more than 200 drawings of castles in Holland, Utrecht, and Gelderland.

Signed, lower right, "R R---" (trimmed), inscribed on verso, "Apspoel. Rijnland bij 't Warmonderhek."

Possibly Albert Bentes and his wife Catharina Baeck; possibly by descent to Hillebrand Bentes, Amsterdam, 16 October 1708, his list no. 218 (Abspoel); probably to Christiaan van Hoek (mentioned in the list by Rudolf Smids of 1711, p. 6, and in Abraham de Haen's list made in his copy of Smids' Schatkamer der Nederlandse Outheden ..., Abtspoel in Rhijnland onder Oegstgeest; possibly by descent to Anthonie van Hoek; from who possibly acquired by Jean de Wolff; Cornelis Ploos van Amstel; Van der Schley, Amsterdam; his sale 3 March 1800 and following, part of folder KK6 (all nine lots for Nlg. 2,000) to C. S. Roos; C. Hofstede de Groot; Dutch nobleman, purchased in 1930; by descent to his grandson; Thomas Le Claire Kunsthandel, Hamburg.
