Inscription:

Signed and dated at a later date at lower right, in pen and black ink, "Henri Matisse 12".

Provenance:
Jean and Marie Matisse, France; Lumley Cazalet, London; Heinz Berggruen, Paris and Switzerland; Acquavella galleries, New York; Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw, New York.
Notes:

This drawing is a study for Matisse's large composition, Music, painted in 1910 for the Russian collector Sergey Shchukin and now in the collection of the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg. Matisse added the signature and date (12) at the bottom of this sheet at a later date, during the 1940s, misremembering the actual year of the sketch.
Watermark: none.
