Notes:

Typical of Claude's double-sided sketchbook sheets, this page is heavily washed on the recto and contains a slight sketch of a goat in red chalk on the verso, combining observations about the landscape and the animals who dwell in it. Roethlisberger considered the present sheet close in style to Claude's drawings of the late 1630s. Claude has depicted a traveler shouldering a burden and hiking up a hillside to a stone doorway embedded in the rock.

Inscription:

Inscribed in pen and brown ink by a later hand on the rock at lower left: "C. Gellee".
