Notes:

This vertical composition depicting a stand of trees in a hilly landscape is exceptional among Cézanne's late watercolors and exemplifies his technical mastery of dissolving and constructing form through an accumulation of strokes of diluted wash. The site, which does not recur in other works by the artist, has yet to be identified but may be along the road to Château Noir, east of Aix-en-Provence. -- Exhibition Label, from "Drawn to Greatness: Master Drawings from the Thaw Collection"
