Notes
This is the Morgan's first drawing by Cruyl, whose etched views of Rome were widely published in his lifetime. It represents the Piazza Navona in Rome, a site still cherished by visitors to Rome today, with Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers in its center, and the Church of Sant'Agnese on the right. The south tower of the church has not yet been built, while the north tower is shown under scaffolding, thus dating the drawing to after December 1663 and before October 1664. The sheet served as the prima idea for an engraving by Cruyl.
