Notes: 

Carl Johann Arnold, son of Menzel's friends, was the artist's student in the late 1840s. Another drawing in the collection of Charles Ryskamp portrays a slightly older Arnold, while he appears in the present sheet to be about the same age as the artist's portrait of him asleep on a sofa, a drawing in the Thaw collection (EVT number 117).
