Inscribed by the artist, in pen and brown ink, at upper left, "[..]so[..] fiamma mie dentro un anima et la fia[m]ma in / [che dansa(?) a modo di lingua con la q[u]a [a superscript]le parlano a dante / [...] li con novembre(?) marino(?)"; below this, throughout labelling the figures, "V[ergil]; D[ante]"; at upper left, "Ulisse; Diomede"; to the right of this, "co[n]te guido da / mo[n]tefeltro, che Minos sduolse(?) [ie. svolse] 8. / volte la coda e lo mando' qui"; to the right, "falsi & astuti / FRAUDOLE[N]TI CONSIGLIERI"; at upper right, "OTTAVO CERCH[IO] / 8a [a superscript] Bolgia"; at lower left, "il ponte ronchioso talche lo pie senza la man non si s[ped]ia. Dante s' appoggia et piglia con la mano un ronchione altrime[nti]".
