This sheet is a study for the figure of the carpenter from "A Carpenter's Shop", a now lost painting that the artist submitted to the Salon of 1775. A smaller altered version still exists in a private collection in the United States, as well as an engraving by Jean-Paul Le Bas which records the original composition.
