Around 1736-8 Troost made about 38 representations of the play "Jan Claasz. of de gewaende dienstmaeght" ("Jan Claesz. or the Supposed Maid Servant"), written by Thomas Asselijn (1620-1701) half a century earlier, in the 1680s. The Morgan drawing is one of at least four illustrations of Act 3, Scene 6 of the play.
