Duck, Possibly "Anas Querquedula," the Male Garganey
Watercolor and white opaque watercolor over black chalk, on paper; the large mound on which the duck stands is in watercolor on the smaller sheet.
Silhouetted (height of duck, 5 1/8 inches [130 mm]) and adhered to sheet measuring 7 3/16 x 10 3/16 inches (183 x 258 mm); this sheet in turn mounted on album leaf measuring 8 3/8 x 10 5/8 inches (214 x 269 mm).

Watermark: none visible through lining.
Leaf from an album dismembered in 1952 containing bird and animal studies, traditionally said to have been presented to Emperor Charles V in 1552.

Inscription: 

Inscribed at lower center of album leaf, in brown ink, "Pato" (Spanish for "drake"). Numbered on verso, in graphite, "1 38-19=310 P"; stamp of Paris customs in blue.
