Jane Shoaf Turner, with contributions by Felice Stampfle, Dutch Drawings in the Pierpont Morgan Library: Seventeenth to Nineteenth Centuries, New York, 2006, cat. no. 382.
The inscription "May" on the old mount of this drawing, which entered the Library with an attribution to Johanna Helena Herolt, suggests that there may once have been a series of 12 depictions corresponding to the Months. Indeed, the "Matthiola incana" or "Brompton double stock" is noted for its early spring flowering.
Formerly attributed to Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717).
