Inscription:
Inscribed on a cartouche on the old mount (now destroyed), "May".
Provenance:
Richard Day Ltd., London; from whom acquired by Charles Ryskamp, Princeton and New York, 1987.
Notes:
The inscription "May" on the old mount of this drawing, which entered the Library with an attribution to Johanna Helena Herolt, suggests that there may once have been a series of 12 depictions corresponding to the Months. Indeed, the "Matthiola incana" or "Brompton double stock" is noted for its early spring flowering.
Formerly attributed to Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717).
