Notes
The drawing entered the collection of the Morgan Library as by Malombra, an attribution which to all appearances originated with Janos Scholz, who in a note in 1968 remarked "Malombra is still the closest one can get." The corpus of accepted drawings by Malombra has remained exceedingly small ever since Tietze and Tietze-Conrat first assembled a group of thirteen drawings under that name (Tietze and Tietze-Conrat 1944, pp. 187ff).
Rhoda Eitel-Porter identified the link between this drawing and a sheet at the Uffizi, inv. 6771 S, which is a study for the same composition, thus allowing the identification of the Morgan sheet (formerly described as a "Female Saint, with a Vision") as a sketch for the Martyrdom of St. Ursula and her Companions. Although the Uffizi drawing has been catalogued as the work of Cesare Nebbia since 2008, Eitel-Porter believes that the attribution of both sheets to Malombra is convincing.
