Belle da Costa Greene came to the Library at the age of twenty-one in 1905 as J. Pierpont Morgan's librarian and was later named Director in 1924 when the Library was incorporated as an endowed institution. Helleu drew Belle's portrait in 1913, several months prior to Pierpont Morgan's death.
