Venus and Cupid
9 1/8 x 15 1/16 inches (231 x 381 mm)
Pen and brown ink, over black chalk, on blue paper.
IV, 74
Purchased by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) in 1909.
Notes
Watermark: none.
The drawing appears to be by a North Italian artist of the late sixteenth or early seventeeenth century. An attribution to Agostino Carracci was put forward by David Lachenmann in 1990 (note on mount) and though this seems unlikely, the artist may well be found among the followers of that master.
After Titian (?)
