The counterproof of a cabinetmaker on the verso of the lining suggests that the drawing was once part of an album devoted to the subject of laborers.

On back of lining: counterproof of a cabinetmaker, in black chalk.
Inscribed at lower right in pen and brown ink, "C. Vanni"; numbered at upper right corner of mount in pen an dbrown ink, "116 [crossed out and cut off?] / g [cut off]"; inscribed at bottom edge of mount in pen and brown ink, "del C. Vanni Vecchio emulando Annibale Caracci, men vigoroso, forse più morbido".
