Inscribed at lower left, in pen and brown ink, "Carpatio"; on mount, beneath drawing, in graphite, by Popham?, "PADUAN SCHOOL, XV CENT.", on lining, removed from mount and now in departmental files, in pen and brown ink, by John Skippe?, "Vittorio Carpaccio was born at Venice and was contemporary with / Gentile and Giovanni Bellini, his principal works are in the school / of Sta Ursula at Venice, where they are now tolerably well preserved: / he died about the year 1500".
