The drawing is one of two studies by the same hand in the Morgan Library, which are designs for chiaroscuro prints intended to illustrate an emblem book.

Possibly attributed to Girolamo Pennacchi, called Girolamo da Treviso Il Giovane, Treviso ca. 1498-1544 Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Inscription: 

Inscribed at lower center, in pen and brown ink, "Desiderio"; on mount, underneath drawing, in pen and brown ink, "Geboren A.o[o superscript]1555 / gestorben 1630"; in graphite, "La.lp(?)"; on verso of mount, in graphite, "Antonio Tempesta / 1555-"; on verso of lining, previously on back of drawing, now in departmental files, in graphite, "3 /".
