1707-1769
Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine
Pen and brown ink, over black chalk, on paper.
18 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches (470 x 343 mm)
Purchased by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) in 1909.
I, 79
Notes:

Formerly attributed to Anonymous, Italian school, probably Venetian.
A painter, printmaker, and draftsman, Fontebasso began as a pupil of Sebastiano Ricci but clearly also admired the work of Giambattista Tiepolo. Although long classified as an anonymous work, this densely hatched drawing, which may have been made for sale to a collector rather than as a study for a painting or print, is close in style to others by Fontebasso and may well be by him. --Exhibition Label, from "Tiepolo, Guardi, and Their World: Eighteenth-Century Venetian Drawings"
