In his 2009 monograph on Gaulli (p. 138, 163, 374), Francesco Petrucci links the drawing to Gaulli's portrait of Alexander VII, location unknown, formerly with the antiquario Viancini in Venice. Brauer and Wittkower (1931) and Martinelli (1950) proposed the reattribution of the drawing from Bernini to Gaulli.
