Jonathan Richardson Sr. (Lugt 2183); Joseph Gulston (1744(?)-1786), Ealing Grove, London (formerly pseudo-Crozat; Lugt 474); Comte de Caylus, Paris (no mark; see Lugt 2919); Dr. Barry Delany; Dr. Edward Riggall; his sale, London, Sotheby's, 6-8 June 1901, probably no. 447, one of seven, (sold to C. Lindsay for £1.11.0); S.W.H.L.; Walter Hugelshofer, Zurich; by whom presented in Zurich in 1948 to Janos Scholz, New York (no mark; see Lugt S. 2933b)

The inchoate form at far right seems to depict a lion, the attribute associated with St. Jerome. However, the figure’s youth and short beard suggest that the present study might illustrate Daniel in the Lion’s Den.
