Notes
Traditionally considered the work of Stefano della Bella and said to represent a "Convention of the Knights of St. Stephen," this sheet has also been attributed to Domenico Tempesti or Bastiano Tromba (see Paliaga 1985, 328). It depicts the celebration on 25 April 1683 for the translation of St. Stephen's relics to the church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri in Pisa, with the wooden altar of Pier Francesco Silvani, a sculptural group by Giovanni Battista Foggini, and the painted standard above by Pietro Dandini. Kira d'Alburquerque (see Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, ser. 5, 16, no. 1 (2024): 340-73) has attributed the drawing to Diacinto Maria Marmi (ca. 1625-1702), the architect responsible for the ceremony, although she notes that the dearth of figural drawings by Marmi makes confirmation of the attribution impossible for now. The drawing was perhaps preparatory for an engraving, though no such work is known.
Watermark: none.
