Watermill at the Edge of a Wood
Pen and black ink and wash, over black chalk, on paper; framing lines in brown ink.
12 x 12 7/8 inches (306 x 327 mm)
Purchased by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) in 1909.
III, 219
Notes:

Watermark: none visible through lining
The sheet is associated with a drawing in the British Museum, London, of a "Woodland Scene" that is signed with the monogram "AvC" and dated 1654 (inv. no. Oo. 10-225). On the basis of that monogram, the London drawing has been catalogued as by Adriaen van der Cabel (1631-1705). However, both the London and Morgan compositions are unlike anything else in van der Cabel's drawn oeuvre. Moreover, van der Cabel [or Kabel] usually signed "AVK (in ligature)". The correct author for both sheets is surely to be sought among other Dutch artists with the initials "AvC".
