Two Men before Thatched Farmhouses with a Wattled Fence
1616
Pen and brown ink and brown wash, with gray wash, over black chalk, on paper; framing line in brown ink.
5 15/16 x 7 7/8 inches (150 x 200 mm)
Purchased by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) in 1909.
I, 117
Notes:

Watermark: none?.
Although only this drawing is dated (1616), the somewhat similar style, technique and format of I, 117a suggests that the two may have been intended as pendants (though the former is in a slightly lighter shade of brown ink).

Inscription:

Signed and dated at lower right, in brown ink, "EʺVV(in ligature)ELDE · 1616".

Provenance:
Possibly W.H. Barnard, Esq.; possibly his sale, London, Sotheby's, 7-8 April 1893, one of six in lot 52: "E. van de Velde.
