Notes:

Watermark: none visible through lining with fiber optic light.
A weak copy of the Morgan sheet is in the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, London. It is important in showing another full figure on the right of the composition, of which only a few indications remain on the Morgan drawing (which was clearly trimmed at some point at both top and right).

Inscription:

Inscribed on the old mount, at lower center, in brown ink, "Rembrandt".; on the verso, [?where], in Robinson's hand, in black ink, "JC Robinson / from the Hon. Lewis Wingfield's sale / Feb 10 - 1892"; and on top of this, in graphite, "19 / No 4 [or 21]".

Provenance:
Possibly George William Reid (1819-87), London (no mark; see Lugt 1210); possibly his sale, London, Sotheby's, 26-9 February 1890, lot 639: "Good Samaritan by Rembrandt" (to Fairfax Murray to £5.10.0); Charles Fairfax Murray, London; The Hon. Lewis Strange Wingfield, London; Sir John Charles Robinson (1824-1913), London and Edinburgh (no mark; see Lugt 1433); Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), London and Florence; from whom purchased through Galerie Alexandre Imbert, Rome, in 1909 by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York (no mark; see Lugt 1509); his son, J. P. Morgan, Jr. (1867-1943), New York.
