The drawing is one of four versions of the scene by the artist. The others are in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, and the Prentenkabinet der Rijksuniversiteit, Leiden; the fourth version was on the Paris art market in 1986.

Faint traces of a signature at lower center, in black chalk, "Molyn".
Watermark: Foolscap with five points over "4" and three balls, fragment of bottom.

Probably Dr. Edward J. Riggall, London; probably his sale, London, Sotheby's, 6-8 June 1901, one of seven in lot 521: "P. Molyn. Studies of landscape, mostly signed (7)" (to Fairfax Murray for £7.0.0); Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), London and Florence; from whom purchased through Galerie Alexandre Imbert, Rome, in 1909 by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York (no mark; see Lugt 1509); his son, J.
