The drawing is a study for the figure to the right in the artist's early painting "The Charlatan" in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence.

Inscription: 

Signed at lower right, in black chalk, "F.V.Mieris". Inscribed on the verso, at lower left, in the hand of Ploos van Amstel, in black chalk, "Fr.v.Mieris / de Oude f / h 9 dm ["m" in superscript] / b 6 d"; and below this, in graphite, "f 210". On a piece of board pasted on the old mount (no longer preserved), "from Miss James's sale-23 June 1891.CE.CE".
