Copy after Jan van Huysum
1682-1749

Flowers in an Urn and a Bird's Nest on a Stone Ledge within a Niche

18 13/16 x 13 7/16 inches (477 x 341 mm)
Black chalk and watercolor, on laid paper; remnants of a framing line in brown ink.
I, 164a

Purchased by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) in 1909.

Notes
Another version of the same subject was formerly on the London art market (sale, London, Sotheby's, 1 December 1966, lot 63). Neither it, nor the Morgan drawing, is of sufficient quality to be by van Huysum himself and both probably depend on a common prototype.
Formerly attributed to Jan van Huysum, 1628-1749.
Inscriptions/Markings
Inscribed on the verso, at lower right, in Ploos van Amstel's hand, in brown ink, "h: 19d / b: 13 1/2d / J. van Huysum del".
Watermark: Countermark, letters "IV", between two chain lines. Lead white and copper green paint of drawing show in backround of beta radiograph.
